French Partial Immersion Language Program
East Claremont Primary School offers to its students a unique French Partial Immersion Language Program. This program was devised by the Education Department of Western Australia (EDWA), and has been a feature of the school curriculum at East Claremont since 1994. Our program is strongly supported and recommended by Alliance Française de Perth.
There are many different LOTE (Language Other than English) programs in Western Australian schools. However East Claremont is the only school in Western Australia offering the French language through the Partial Immersion Program.
Partial immersion is a form of bilingual education in which students learn aspects of the curriculum in a second language. Both languages are used in teaching school curriculum areas such as Science, Technology and Enterprise, Health, and Society and Environment.
East Claremont students from years 1-7 receive up to 3 hours of instruction of the curriculum in French per week, covering core subjects such as Science, Health, Technology and Enterprise and Society and Environment.
Benefits of the French Partial Immersion Program
The benefits of the French Partial Immersion Program are many:
- Literacy skills are taught in French and this in turn reinforces literacy skills in the mother tongue.
- Students gain understanding, insight and an appreciation of the French culture and broaden their horizons of many subjects.
- Students gain an appreciation of the role and function of their native language and their new language.
The school's French Immersion teacher and education assistant are native born speakers who are enthusiastic and supportive of the program, and display outstanding teaching skills.
Students who complete their primary schooling at East Claremont then have the choice of continuing to learn French as a second language at either their feeder state school or private colleges.
Surveys and feedback indicate our students are extremely well prepared in their comprehension and understanding of the French language and do very well in their future French language studies at the secondary school level.
